The Bristol Protected Characteristics Questionnaire was co-developed with members of the public to collect protected characteristics data, as well as caring responsibilities and postcode (to calculate Index of Multiple Deprivation). The original questionnaire was designed to be used by researchers who want to collect demographic information about their research participants.

The questions can be used in an online format or as a paper questionnaire, depending on the needs of the group. The original questionnaire was designed intentionally using colours and fonts that meet accessibility needs.

We advise using the questionnaire on consent, rather than retrospectively, to be able to collect complete data. You may therefore wish to customise the introduction for your audience, but we advise against changing the questions.

There are three questionnaires available for different use cases:

1. The Original Bristol Protected Characteristics Questionnaire (for use with Research Participants)

2. The Bristol Protected Characteristics Questionnaire for Public Contributors.

3. The Bristol Protected Characteristics Questionnaire for Staff.
